Caring for people, places and the planet
Since 1901, ISS has been built on a simple belief: people make places. As a global workplace experience and facility management company, we create environments where people can thrive, organisations can perform, and communities can grow.
Our responsibility extends across the places we care for, the people who work in and around them, and the planet we all share. By acting responsibly in everything we do, from how we treat our employees and partners, to how we reduce environmental impact and support inclusive growth, we aim to create lasting, positive impact.
When we get it right, workplaces become better places to be, businesses become more resilient, and everyday life works better. This is what drives us, and what shapes how we create value for our customers, society and future generations.
Creating sustainable value
As one of the world’s leading workplace experience and facility management companies, ISS has a unique opportunity and responsibility, to create positive impact at scale. With 325.000+ employees across multiple countries, the way we operate every day matters.
People:
Our promise is to run a sustainable business that creates long‑term value for customers, employees, shareholders and society. We do this by embedding responsibility into our strategy, decision‑making and operations, ensuring that sustainability supports performance, resilience and growth.
Planet:
We focus our efforts where we can make the greatest difference: through our people, the places we care for, and the services we deliver. By acting responsibly, partnering closely with customers and suppliers, and continuously improving how we work, we aim to contribute to a more inclusive, low‑carbon and resilient world.
Performance:
Our approach is structured around three interconnected priorities: People, Planet and Performance, reflecting our belief that sustainable business success depends on balancing social, environmental and economic value.
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)
Environmental
As the climate crisis worsens, supporting our planet isn’t just an opportunity, it’s a responsibility. We champion sustainable workplaces by focusing on areas where we make a material difference for our clients. We aim to reduce waste in energy, water, food, and materials across all facility operations. By optimising resource usage and changing behaviours, we strive to meet and exceed sustainability standards.
Social
As ISS, our purpose is to 'make space for people and businesses to thrive', highlighting our commitment to putting people at the heart of our business. Our social sustainability approach has four key pillars - inclusion, living wages, recognised qualifications and social value measurement, which together help us create a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable future for all.
Governance
At ISS, governance is integrated through policies like our Code of Conduct and Global People Standards. These frameworks enforce ethical behaviour, combat corruption, and promote inclusivity. We prioritise legal compliance and encourages employees to voice concerns anonymously via our Speak Up policy, fostering a responsible, transparent business environment supporting sustainable development goals.
Supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals
End poverty in all its forms everywhere by working with our customers, policy makers and NGOs to advance the implementation of living wages for frontline placemakers and offer sufficient working hours to earn a living income. By championing and driving forward the living wage movement globally, we can help to eliminate in-work poverty.
Offer quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all by providing placemakers and their families with access to recognised qualifications that support meaningful career progression and equip them with skills for the workplaces of the future. Through education and skills development we can improve equality of opportunity and support placemakers to achieve their personal and professional aspirations.
Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by embracing diversity and inclusion. ISS targets 40% women in its workforce by 2026. We support female leadership through development and graduate programmes, promote women into senior roles, and educate staff on harassment and discrimination through clear policies.
Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all by ensuring minimum wages are paid, employee have safe working environments, and the right to organise is upheld. ISS invests in employee development, continuously works to eliminate injuries and fatalities, and enforces zero tolerance of forced labour, child labour, modern slavery and human trafficking in our operations.
Reduce inequality within and among countries by providing inclusive employment opportunities. As one of the world’s largest private employers, ISS supports people from diverse backgrounds, including refugees, those with disabilities, and those who struggle to find employment. We invest in education and skills development to enable meaningful career progression and increase long‑term earning potential, reducing inequalities.
Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns by working with our suppliers to develop innovative tools and processes that lower environmental impact, such as 100% biodegradable cleaning products that deliver high performance while being safe for people and the environment. We also educate our placemakers and customers on sustainable consumption patterns reducing energy consumption.
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts by reducing our carbon emissions and environmental impacts across our operations and supporting our customers to reduce their own emissions, through insights and targeted actions. ISS has a Net Zero emissions target for 2040, covering all scopes.
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels by upholding ethical behaviour and maintaining zero tolerance for discrimination. Our Code of Conduct and Global People Standards guide how we work and are supported by mandatory training. Corruption and bribery are illegal and against our values, and we encourage employees to speak up safely, anonomously and without fear of reprisal through our Speak Up system.
